SCRAPBOOK: JACQUIE FITZGERALD COLL #1

PHOTO SCRAPBOOK
Jacquie Fitzgerald Collection #1

The following pictures from Jacquie Fitzgerald’s collection span the time frame between the late 1980s through to the late 1990s.

Jacquie joined the CBC Toronto offices in 1976 as a Clerk in the Systems and Planning departments.  In 1979, Jacquie and husband Ray moved to Vancouver where Jacquie was hired as a Clerk in TV Programming and was assigned to Beachcombers for one season before training in TV News to cover Unit Manager Jan Durban’s maternity leave.  Subsequent Unit Manager assignments for Jacquie included Local TV News and Pacific Report as well as regional contributions to the National News, The Journal and Fifth Estate.  Budget cutbacks at the Corporation led to layoff in June 1985 and Jacquie worked as a Unit Manager for six months at CKVU before returning to CBC in December of that year.  As a Unit Administrator with CBC Radio, Jacquie was responsible for Radio Music, Variety and News & Sports.  In May, 1990 she returned to Television as a Unit Manager for TV Drama series’ co-productions Max Glick, Northwood, The Odyssey; two Movies of the Week – The Diary of Evelyn Lau and Little Criminals; plus CBC series’ Front Page Challenge and Canadian Gardener.  Jacquie embarked on early retirement in March 1997 when the Corp was hit with yet another round of budget cuts.

In 1998 as a freelancer Jacquie was hired to handle payroll on a new 22-episode TV series titled First Wave, an assignment which continued to February, 1999.  The following year, former CBC Radio colleague Greg Barnes referred her to the District of North Vancouver whose Parks Dept required help with their budgets prior to an upcoming audit.   Jacquie says she enjoyed the experience working in a completely different field for three months learning a new computer program that stood her in good stead for another job opening, this time with the District of West Vancouver.   What started out as a short-term position doing payroll two days per week, morphed into 12 years.  Jacquie finally retired from the workforce in December 2014.

While still working, in 2010 Jacquie joined a non-audition choir called "Burstin' with Broadway"  which she reports was somewhat of a life-changer for her.   “Being someone who does not play an instrument or is able to read music, this outlet to sing popular Broadway show tunes with a bunch of like-minded people is a joy”, says Jacquie.   In past years, the choir has performed at the Dundarave Festival of Lights every December in aid of homeless people on the North Shore and provided concerts at Residential Care Facilities but their main concerts (matinee and evening performances) are usually on the first Saturday in June at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver.

Jacquie also enjoys regular yoga classes at the WV Community Center and attends occasional yoga retreats.  A long-time member of the CBC 20 Year Association (now CBC/SRC Association), Jacquie took on the responsibilities of Treasurer in 2017 and continues to hold that post today.

Photographs are a wonderful part of memories, and very often they form part of collective as much as individual memories.  That’s what this segment is all about – the memories we share of CBC English and French, Television and Radio productions and the people who have made them happen through the years in either work or social settings.  We hope you will enjoy the collections posted here and will search your own and let us share them too.  If you have just one picture or dozens, send them in!

The supply of photographs that your Stationbreak.ca team has to draw from for new Scrapbook and Flashback postings is running out, so PLEASE, dig out your albums and boxes of photos taken prior to the year 2010 and send in your collections for us to share.  Whether the pictures were captured during filming/taping of productions, in the CBC offices, or at social functions with CBC colleagues on or off the CBC premises, we’d love to have them.  If you’re able to scan and send them via e-mail, that would be wonderful, or if you’re willing to loan the original photos we will scan and return them to you.  Please contact Peggy Oldfield via https://goo.gl/QNvaxu and she will supply her direct e-mail address or contact you to make arrangements for scanning of your photos.  We can’t keep these sections going without your input so, in advance, THANK YOU for taking the time to help us
