SCRAPBOOK #217-JACQUIE FITZGERALD COLLECTION

PHOTO SCRAPBOOK #217
Jacquie Fitzgerald Collection - 1996 and 1997

Jacquie Fitzgerald's CBC career kicked off in 1976 when she joined CBC Toronto staff as a Clerk in Systems and Planning departments.  In 1979 Jacquie and husband Ray moved to Vancouver where she was hired as a Clerk in TV Programming.  She worked one season on-location with The Beachcombers in Gibsons, B.C. and then trained in TV News to cover Unit Manager Jan Durban's maternity leave.  Her assignments included Local TV News, Pacific Report, regional contributions to the National News, The Journal and Fifth Estate.  CBC budget cut-backs led to layoff for Jacquie in June 1985 and for the next six months she worked at CKVU as a Unit Manager.  In December that year she returned to CBC Radio with assignments in Radio Music, Variety, News and Sports.  In May 1990, Jacquie transferred back to Television as a Unit Manager assigned to TV Drama series' co-productions Max Glick, Northwood and The Odyssey as well as Movie-of-the-Week features The Diary of Evelyn Lau and Little Criminals.  Jacquie also held Unit Manager responsibility for the series Front Page Challenge and Canadian Gardener.  Jacquie took an early retirement package in March, 1997 but returned to the Corporation a year later to handle payroll for the TV series First Wave which ran 22 episodes until February, 1999.  In November, 2000, Jacquie's former CBC Radio colleague Greg Barnes referred her to the District of North Vancouver whose Parks Department required help with budgets prior to an audit. She enjoyed the experience working in a completely different field for three months learning a new computer program that she says stood her in good stead for another job opening, this time with the District of West Vancouver.   What started out as a short-term position doing payroll two days per week, morphed into 12 years.  Jacquie finally retired in December 2014.

In 2010, Jacquie joined a non-audition choir called "Burstin' with Broadway"  which she says was somewhat of a life-changer for her.  She adds that, "Being someone who does not play an instrument or is able to read music, this outlet to sing popular Broadway show tunes with a bunch of like-minded people is a joy."   The group sings at the Dundarave Festival of Lights every December in aid of homeless people on the North Shore and provides concerts at Residential Care Facilities but the main concerts (matinee and evening performances) are on the first Saturday in June at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver.  As well, Jacquie started taking yoga lessons in 2015 at the local West Vancouver Community Centre and for the last three years she has been attending a class twice a week.   Two of her yoga instructors hosted a yoga retreat in Osoyoos in the Fall of 2016 with 20+ participants over a three-day period which, reports Jacquie, "...included early morning meditation by the lake followed by a yoga class, all before breakfast.  The middle of the day was spent visiting the fabulous wineries and towards the end of the day, another yoga class followed by dinner at the hotel with wine, of course."

In the last few years Jacquie has been heavily involved with the Strata Council in an attempt to get a workable and cost effective way to manage the condominium complex where she and Ray live.   This has been achieved and Jacquie has now stepped down from the Council. Two years ago she joined the local Women's Probus club in West Vancouver and enjoys attending the lectures held once a month.   Jacquie notes they've had some great speakers on subjects like religion, science, the judicial system, etc.  She was asked by the President  if she would consider joining their board but had to tell her she'd just finished a long stint on a Strata Council and needed a break, besides which Jacquie had also at that point consented to run for the position of Treasurer with the CBC 20 Year Association.  Jacquie was elected to that position in 2017 and was re-elected for another term in March of this year.

Jacquie's photo collection presented in this new Scrapbook covers two events – Elizabeth Dichmont's (Resources Manager, TV Scheduling) retirement in October, 1996 (no pictures of Elizabeth unfortunately) and the CBC Farewell Party in Studio 42 on March 21, 1997 which was held to say goodbye to 123 people in Vancouver (including Jacquie) through early retirement or lay-off resulting from continuing budget cuts to the Corporation.  Jacquie's photos from this 1997 party are augmented here by photos from the Mike & Peggy Oldfield collection (some of which may have been posted previously).

Photographs are a wonderful part of memories, and very often they form part of collective as much as individual memories.  That's what this segment is all about – the memories we share of CBC English and French, Television and Radio productions  and the people who have made them happen through the years in either work or social settings.  We hope you will enjoy the collections posted here and will search your own and let us share them too.  If you have just one picture or dozens, send them in!  "Photo Scrapbook" will show 6 or more photos in any one collection and new postings appear bi-weekly (every other Monday).
Please e-mail your submissions to https://goo.gl/QNvaxu or if you don't mind loaning the original prints (we promise to take good care of them), they will be returned to you.  To arrange for such loan, please leave a message for Peggy Oldfield at the above address or at 604-662-6409 and she will get in touch with you.
