ENCORE SCRAPBOOK #22
Chris Cutress Collection #1 (Originally posted March 22, 2010 as Scrapbook #36)

The original text that accompanied the collection of photos from Chris Cutress is reprinted below with some added detail to the information about Chris's life to bring us up to date.

"The following collection is the first from CBC Vancouver Radio retiree Chris Cutress.  Chris was hired by CBC Vancouver on April Fool's Day 1974.   His first job was in the mailroom at 747 Bute Street, but he quickly moved to Radio Technical and on his very first day, worked with Bob Kerr's Off The Record  (with Rusty Hopper) in the Hotel Vancouver, followed soon after by Hot Air with Bob Smith.  In the mid seventies, not only was Chris in new surroundings in CBC Vancouver's new home at 700 Hamilton Street, but he also found his true niche - the sound effects / drama department - learning the art of foley with Joe Silva and Jay Hireen, while continuing music production on Jazzland with Craig Wood and Gavin Walker, and Neon with Susan Englebert and J. B. Shayne.  Chris tech'd the first two years of DiscDrive with Tom Deacon and Jurgen Gothe earning a merit position for his work there and on Command Performance. Moving to full time SFX Specialist and backup Recording Engineer, he continued to develop his skills working with Robert Chesterman, Don Kowalchuk, John Juliani, Don Mowatt, William Lane, Heather Brown, Kathleen Flaherty and many others who produced in the Radio Drama Studio 3.  Hundreds of productions followed, including series such as Flynn, Out Go The Lights, Nightfall, Vanishing Point, The Mystery Project, Sextet, Disasters: Acts of Man or Acts of God, Portraits, and numerous Morningside dramas. One special highlight for Chris was working on King Lear, which featured John Colicos as Lear and a cast comprised of dozens of Vancouver's finest voice actors including Robert Clothier ("Relic" from The Beachcombers)."

In 2001 Chris met his wife Charlotte and they adopted a daughter (Yuli) from Szechuan, China in April 2002 during the worldwide SARS epidemic. Since 2002 he has traveled internationally to China three times and India twice as well as to the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States and Caribbean destinations.

After 35 years with the Corporation (mostly in the Radio Services), Chris retired at the end of July, 2009.

He continues to perform freelance 'Sound and Music Recording and Editing', 'Audio Archival Restoration', 'CD Mastering', 'Sound Design and Production', and 'Video Transfer to DVD' through his company Sabre Sound (sabresound.com).

Chris and his family are embarking on a new adventure in late 2018 as they are relocating to a new home in South Surrey.

Chris can be contacted at chriscutress@telus.net  .

In Collection #1 from Chris, we have:
1.  Taken during a remote Radio production in Kamloops during the Arts Festival in 2002 – Tod Elvidge (Producer, Radio Performance), Chris Cutress (Recording Engineer) and John Henderson (Senior Maintenance Technician) draining the tub brought in for a sound effect of "paddling down the river".  It sprang a leak in the theatre and had to be dragged out and emptied.
2.  Tod Elvidge cleaning up (literally) after removal of the leaky tub during the Kamloops Arts Festival in 2002.  Derek Bird (Recording Engineer) is in the background at the right of the photo.
3.  Recording Engineers Bruce Dierick, Richard Champagne and Don Harder in Radio Studio One during Dal Richards' recording sessions in June 2009.  These sessions were the inaugural shakedown of the new console in CBC Vancouver Studio One and the recordings are on the current Dal Richards' Compact Disk.
4.  Orchestra Leader Dal Richards and John Mang (Manager, Production & Resources) in Studio One during the 2009 recording sessions.
5.  Derek Bird (Recording Engineer), Tod Elvidge (Producer, Radio Performance) and Bob Blackwood (Executive Producer, Performance – retired) during the same recording sessions, June 2009.
6.  Writer/Broadcaster Bill Richardson.  Bill has been the host of many CBC programs including Crosswords, As You Like It, Richardson's Roundup, Canada Reads and Bunny Watson.  He is currently host of Saturday Afternoon at the Opera and In Concert on CBC Radio 2 on Sunday afternoons.
7.  Bruce Dierick, Recording Engineer.
8.  Richard Champagne, Recording Engineer.
9.  Don Pennington, Producer, Radio Performance.
10. The CBC Logo affectionately known as "The Wings" although in actual fact the map of Canada is framed by a thunderbolt design symbolizing broadcasting.  It is the original logo which was used between 1940 and 1958.

Photographs are a wonderful part of memories, and very often they form part of collective as much as individual memories.  That's what this segment is all about – the memories we share of CBC English and French, Television and Radio productions  and the people who have made them happen through the years in either work or social settings.  We hope you will enjoy the collections posted here and will search your own and let us share them too.  If you have just one picture or dozens, send them in!  "Photo Scrapbook" will show 6 or more photos in any one collection and new postings appear bi-weekly (every other Monday).
Please e-mail your submissions to https://goo.gl/QNvaxu or if you don't mind loaning the original prints (we promise to take good care of them), they will be returned to you.  To arrange for such loan, please leave a message for Peggy Oldfield at the above address or at 604-662-6409 and she will get in touch with you.
